What is a softener's resin made of?

Resin is made from petrochemical products.

Originally they were made from natural zeolites but had poor capacity exchange so lots of salt was used for little softening.

The beads look like brown sugar.

They are a cation exchange medium.

A macroporous sulphonated polystyrene bead with 1% DV crosslinking.

To achieve a monospheric bead, i.e., all the same size, was difficult, costly and time consuming but to date this resin technology is unsurpassed in the domestic softening field.
