Cut down on cleaning products
There are some products and chemicals you will use regardless of your water quality:
- Washing powder and fabric conditioner
- Dishwasher powder / tablets / salt / rinse-aid
- Shampoo and conditioner
- Soap, shower gel and bubble bath
- Cream bathroom cleaner
- Washing up liquid
- Shaving foams / soaps
Most of these products end up being washed down the drain after use, and eventually find their way back into the environment in some way or other.
How will a water softener help?
The best solution is to use a lot less products, less often!
Example: in the washing machine
How much soap powder do you use to generate a good lather? You need sufficient to overcome the hardness before the lather will for, because any less will result in your clothes not being properly cleaned. In addition, you throw in a fair amount of conditioner to give your clothes back their softness.
With softened water, there is no hardness to overcome, so a lather forms very quickly and with very little powder. On most soap powder boxes you will find recommendations for usage in hard and soft water, typically around a 50% reduction. With a water softener, you can cut down by even more, and this applies to conditioner as well.
An independent study
An independent WQA detergent savings study confirms this:
“Softening water will allow use of less detergent and save energy by lowering water temperatures while still maintaining or improving performance”
“Stain removal performance increases dramatically when hardness is removed … depending on the stain, hardness reduction was up to 100 times more effective at stain removal than increasing temperature or increasing detergent use”
“When water of any hardness is softened prior to its use in washing, the detergent use can be reduced by 50%”
This same principle applies to all of the products listed above and many more.
The conclusion is clear
