The Great British Hygge

The term ‘hygge‘ is rapidly growing in popularity as we Brits seek to replicate the traditionally Danish practice of cosiness, warmth and quality time.

But rather than replicate the Danes, we’ve asked a range of experts to help us craft the Great British Hygge – a very British take on a new trend:

Ingredients of a British hygge

So what goes into a British hygge?

As you can see from the graphic above, we believe it comes down to six key elements. Click on the links below to learn more about each one:

Great British hygge recipes

Food is an important part of a Great British Hygge. We asked British chefs to give us their suggestions for the warm, cosy foods we can enjoy as part of a hygge this winter. Find their recipes here.

Quality time with friends and family

Quality time with friends and family is one of the defining features of a Danish hygge. Even in today’s digitally driven world, spending real, face to face time with those we care about has great healing powers. We gathered tips on how to make the most of family/friends time and why it’s so important from a range of experts. Find out more here.

“Me” time

It’s not just about spending time with other; a hygge needs to include proper ‘me’ time too. That means taking some time out from the hustle and bustle of daily life and all the things that put pressures on our time, and doing something that helps us reconnect with ourselves. We asked mindfulness experts to provide us their top tips on getting the most out of ‘me’ time; read their tips here.

Create the perfect hygge home ambience

The space in which we spend our hygge time is another important facet. Getting the right ambience can really help when it comes to relaxing and letting go of life’s stresses. Thanks to the kind contributions of a range of partners, we’ve put together some of our favourite hygge themed home products to inspire you. Take a look here.

Snuggle up for some pet pamper time

We Brits love our pets! When it comes to relaxation, what could be more satisfying than sitting down with a cat on your lap to stroke and a good book to read? In honour of the felines that make us happy, and in recognition of our nationwide obsession with online cat videos, find some of our favourite cat videos here, for your viewing pleasure!

The British brew

No British themed anything would be complete without a good cup of tea! Our country’s obsession with tea is famous across the globe and our ability to remedy pretty much any situation with a good cuppa is the envy of many other nations! We asked tea experts to tell us why they think we love tea so much, and to give us their tips on how to make the perfect cup. Find out more here.

What is a British hygge?

The idea of a hygge is traditionally a Danish one. It centres around the idea of ‘cosiness’ and more deeply, the feeling of calm, togetherness, relaxation and happiness derived from making time for yourself and those around you.

It’s a trend that’s really taken hold here in the UK in recent months. The Danish are known for being the happiest country in the world and in times of disruption and uncertainty, it’s no surprise we Brits are taking inspiration from their ways!

But while the Danish might be the happiest country in the world, we in the UK are a very proud nation – and rightly so! There’s a lot to be proud of in Britain and, as a proud British brand, we wanted to distil the essence of ‘hygge’ and give it a British twist.

We’ve asked a range of experts from across the UK (and some from Denmark too) to help us in this task. You see the result here, in the graphic above and in the separate articles we’ve used to explore each element.

We hope you find some inspiration in the British hygge and are able to use it in your own homes this winter.

About Harvey

As a British manufacturer, we’re very proud of our roots and of what we achieve in this country. We’ve spent decades honing our skills and perfecting our water softener product, and we’ve grown our brand through a combination of home sales and exports to partners overseas.

We recognise that there is so much value in learning from other countries as well as our own, and hygge offered us the perfect opportunity to combine a foreign concept with home based values. That’s why we’ve put together this series of guides to creating the Great British Hygge.

If you’d like to learn more about Harveys as a brand, take a look at our about us page, where you’ll learn about our founder Harvey Bowden, our history and our future plans. You can find out more about our water softeners too, or book a demonstration to find out how soft water can contribute to an even more cosy British hygge.
