Why do I need water softener salt?

Salt is an essential that keeps your water softener running smoothly and supplying your home with softened water 24 hours a day.

A Harvey Water Softener™ works by removing the calcium and magnesium in your mains water during a process called ion exchange. Salt is used in the ion exchange process to get rid of the minerals. The salt is also required when the water softener needs to regenerate, this process happens automatically every time a certain amount of water has been softened. Your water softener is flushed with salt water for 10 minutes, using the block salt that is in your machine.

Block salt is therefore vital to the function of your machine, without it hard water will enter your system again. The block salt needs to be replenished as soon as it runs out, to ensure beautifully softened water in your home 24/7.
