In the below article we’ll be exploring if you should shave with softened water. Whether you never give shaving a second thought, or you’re a dedicated enthusiast with a collection of razors and soaps from around the world, one thing is certain – shaving with soft water is just all-round better!
There are a number of reasons for this, but it’s largely due to the fact that hard water forms scum when it mixes with shaving soap – making it very difficult to work up a lather and it spoils the “slickness” that is characteristic of a good shave.
What’s more, you’ll find yourself more vulnerable to problems like razor burn (skin irritation after a shave), and ingrowing hairs if you shave with substandard equipment – and the water you use should always be considered a vital part of your shaving kit, just as much as your razor, soap and brush.
If you live in a hard water area, you have two options for getting a better shave. One is to use more expensive products and moisturisers to mitigate the effects of razor burn, and the other is to install a water softener in your home.
Once you start using softened water to shave, you’ll understand why most people never go back to hard: the improved lather will soften your beard, making it easier to remove hairs. This, together with a lack of mineral build-up on the razor, will help to increase the lifespan of your blades. It’s just one of the many benefits of using softened water in your home.
This applies whether you use modern cartridge razors with disposable blades (which can be costly to replace), or straight razors – which have recently seen a revival in popularity due to James Bond using them in Skyfall. As co-star Naomi Harris remarks in the scene, “sometimes the old ways are the best”!
Eczema is a skin condition which affects 1 in 5 children. Research shows a link between hard water and skin conditions like eczema, as it can make your skin more sensitive to irritation. Find out how a water softener could help your family today.
