The Haircut Price Index reveals UK’s costliest blowdry

The Haircut Price Index

With hairdressers opening across the country again this week, thousands will be flocking to get a trim after three months of closures. Whether you want a blowdry, cut and finish or a whole head of colour, there are certainly going to be queues. With this increase in demand, it’s likely that salons across the board will be upping their prices to cover overheads, as well as to ensure lost revenue from closures, social distancing and new procedures are covered.

Prices have always varied wildly across salons and depending on your specific treatment. We already know that where you are in the country can affect your salon experience, as harder water areas means it’s harder to lather shampoo and wash out products. But where in the country affects you most financially for a haircut? We wanted to explore and find out the average prices across the UK top cities for the most popular treatments.

The data: how did we work it out?

To work this out then, we took pricing information from the most popular treatments in independent regional hairdressers from the top 20 cities across the UK, pulling together a comprehensive list of the cheapest and most expensive places to have common hair treatments across the UK.

We took pricing information for the top most popular treatments from hair salons which includes:

  • Ladies cut and blowdry

  • Gents cut and blowdry

  • Blowdry

  • Full head highlights

  • Half head highlights

  • T-section highlights

  • Full head colour

Once we had worked out each treatment's average cost across the cities, we then worked out the average price of all treatments put together to know which is the cheapest overall for hair treatment.

The data revealed that top 10 cheapest places on average are the following:

CITY

Average treatment cost

Leeds

£38.43

Sheffield

£43.71

Newcastle

£44.57

Cardiff

£45.50

Belfast

£51.57

Aberdeen

£54.57

Edinburgh

£55.34

Glasgow

£57

Liverpool

£57.24

York

£57.86

It looks like you’ll have to head up North for a cheaper haircut, as the two cheapest cities overall on average for haircare appear to be in Yorkshire. Price might not be the only beneficial thing when considering these locations; the water in Yorkshire is a lot softer than some of the more Southern locations, meaning the whole salon experience will be better overall!

The top ten most expensive places are the following:

CITY

Average treatment cost

London

£68.57

Brighton

£66.71

Birmingham

£64.39

Southampton

£63.32

Bristol

£61.76

Reading

£61.39

Cambridge

£60.63

Manchester

£60.53

Leicester

£58.84

Nottingham

£58.38

Unsurprisingly, London is the costliest average overall treatment cost for haircare - but it’s quite closely followed by Brighton and Birmingham! If you’re unlucky enough to live in Southampton or Reading, your hairdresser bills will be high and hard water is also rampant in these areas!
